Interview practice: check, code and export

Work with a short, fictional interview about finding a useful place to study. Compare two texts, correct a draft, manually code a quotation and check your Word file.

Download the two exercise files

You can download the files without an account. The reference is a written script. The draft contains exactly two deliberate errors. There is no audio recording or set of timestamps.

Four steps

  1. Compare the texts

Open the reference and draft in a text editor on your computer. Find an incorrect frequency and a sentence whose meaning has been reversed. Use the reference to check both errors. You do not need an account for this step.

    Check your corrections

The study group meets twice a week, not three times. The student cannot always change their shift at work at short notice; the draft incorrectly says they always can.

  2. Correct and save locally

Correct both errors in the draft and save the corrected text as a TXT file. Rename the heading to “Corrected fictional practice text” and remove the statement that it contains two deliberate errors. Keep the note that the material is fictional. Do this before importing: a project text source is not edited like an audio transcript.

Sign up with your university email

You can download and correct the files without an account. Importing, coding and exporting require an account. Seven free audio hours per month become available after confirming an eligible university email address in one of 13 European countries. The page language does not determine eligibility. This text exercise uses no audio hours.

  3. Import and code manually

Sign in and choose + New project. Fill in Name and choose Create project. Open Documents → + Add files and add your corrected TXT file. Open the file, choose Codes → Add code and create the example code below. Close the Codes drawer, select the whole answer about planning and choose your code from the Apply code menu. Explain your choice in one sentence.

    Example code

Planning study time: select the whole answer about knowing room availability two days before the meeting and not always being able to change a work shift. Explain how those two constraints affect planning. Other well-supported codes are possible.

Does your code describe the quotation, or add an assumption? One fictional interview does not establish a pattern among students.

  4. Download and check Word

Choose Download on the text source. Under Format, choose Word (.docx), turn on Include codes and choose Download. Open the file and check the quotation, code and note that the material is fictional.

Fictional material and your own data

This material is fictional and must not be used as empirical data in an assignment. Audio transcription takes place in the EU; files and accounts are stored in the US. Optional AI features process text in the US. Spirelight does not offer a data processing agreement. Check your institution’s rules and participants’ consent before using your own research data.
